Child Abuse Prevention

Creating a safe environment for children is a shared responsibility. At the YMCA, the safety and well-being of children is our highest priority. We are committed to creating an environment where children can learn, grow, and thrive free from abuse, neglect, bullying, and exploration.

As part of this commitment, the YMCA follows comprehensive child protection policies, staff training requirements, screening procedures, supervision standards, and reporting protocols designed to protect every child entrusted to our care.

Know the Warning Signs

Pay attention to sudden changes, including:

  • Physical signs (unexplained injuries, frequent bruises, signs of neglect)
  • Emotional signs (extreme withdrawal, sudden behavioral changes, fearfulness around certain individuals)
  • Behavioral sign (age-inappropriate sexual knowledge, significant changes in mood, and reluctance to attend programs)

Note: These signs do not necessarily indicate abuse but may warrant concern and further attention

If A Child Shares a Concern:

  1. Listen calmly and without judgment.
  2. Reassure them that they did the right thing by telling you.
  3. Protect them from further contact with the individual involved.
  4. Report concerns to the appropriate authorities and follow required reporting procedures.

Reporting a Concern

See Something? Say Something.

If you witness, suspect, or become aware of child abuse, neglect, inappropriate conduct or a violation of YMCA child protection policies, please report it immediately (can be anonymously reported).
