The Raritan Bay Area YMCA Expands Affordable & Supportive Housing Efforts in Perth Amboy, NJ

January 10, 2025

Perth Amboy, NJ – The Raritan Bay Area YMCA is taking bold steps to address the pressing need for affordable housing in Perth Amboy, NJ. They've recently acquired a 39-unit rooming house located in the heart of the city, furthering its commitment to providing safe, supportive and affordable housing for neighbors in need.

Perth Amboy, along with many other surrounding communities across the state of New Jersey, face significant challenges in affordable housing availability. Recognizing this critical gap, the Y has dedicated itself to expanding affordable supportive housing options to support the city's most vulnerable residents.  The Y has prioritized their efforts to assist individuals and families in the following categories: Disabled and homeless veterans, homeless individuals and families, individuals with mental illness and physical and developmental disabilities (that can thrive independently), and survivors of domestic violence.

The Y’s housing portfolio now includes eight multi-unit properties including two rooming houses dedicated to supporting families and individuals in critical need. In collaboration with the State of New Jersey, the Y helps identify candidates for these homes, providing a foundation for a brighter, more stable future. Recently, through a joint-venture with Coming Home of Middlesex County, the Y completed construction on their newest property and proudly welcomed two families just before Christmas, offering them a fresh start in time for the holiday season.

Beyond housing, the Y’s impact is felt through its comprehensive community services. At the Center for Support, Success, and Prosperity, the Y provides case management services, connects residents to vital resources, aids individuals and families in crisis, operates a weekly food pantry, and more. These efforts highlight the YMCA’s role as a cornerstone of hope and support for the community, demonstrating the Y is far more than a place for fitness — it is a lifeline for Perth Amboy residents.

“This expansion is a reflection of our deep commitment to the community,” said Steve Jobin, President & CEO of the Raritan Bay Area YMCA. “We believe everyone deserves access to safe, affordable housing and the resources they need to build a better future. Our work is driven by the belief that a thriving community starts with stable homes.”

The YMCA’s ongoing efforts to provide affordable housing and support services align with its mission to strengthen individuals and communities. By addressing housing insecurity, the YMCA is ensuring the residents of Perth Amboy have the foundation they need to thrive.
