The RARITAN BAY AREA YMCA is committed to maintaining a clean and healthy environment for everyone. We are closely monitoring information about COVID-19 (Coronavirus), and Y leaders across our state are actively discussing the latest updates from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the World Health Organization.

Coronavirus is a respiratory disease that was first detected in China and has spread to 50 locations internationally, including the United States. As of March 9th, currently, New Jersey is testing patients only at its state lab using test kits provided by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Health officials have shared the test guidelines with licensed clinical labs so they can develop their own. The state has declared two “presumptive” coronavirus cases.

As the situation evolves, we will keep you informed.

Health officials, including Chief Medical Officer Dr. Louis Brusco Jr., MD FCCM CPE from Hackensack Meridian- Raritan Bay Medical Center, advise the best way to prevent Coronavirus is to practice the same good hygiene steps used to prevent cold and flu:
  • Wash hands frequently with soap and water for at least 20 seconds
  • Avoid touching your eyes, nose and mouth with unwashed hands
  • Avoid close contact with people who are ill
  • Cover your mouth and nose when you cough and sneeze using the crook of your elbow or into a tissue that is immediately thrown away
  • Do not reuse tissues
  • Clean and disinfect surfaces frequently touched
  • Maintain a healthy lifestyle through proper hydration, diet, rest and exercise

Specifically, our YMCA is taking the following precautions:

  • Our full facility and classrooms are cleaned every night.
  • We have added additional hand sanitizer dispensers throughout our building to assist with increasing hand cleaning.
  • All Staff, in every department, will be continually cleaning equipment, frequently “touched” areas and common areas.
  • The pool area is cleaned throughout the day. The pool itself is on a filtration system that runs 24 hours a day, 7 days a week.

How you can help:

  • Remember the 3 C’s- Cover, Clean & Contain
  • As we encourage during flu season, please STAY HOME IF YOU ARE NOT FEELING WELL or have any symptoms that could be related to any type of the flu or illness.  The YMCA reserves the right to remove a member from participation if they display signs of illness.
  • Remember to WASH YOUR HANDS FREQUENTLY, for at least 20 seconds.
  • BEFORE & AFTER use of any equipment, please remember to WIPE DOWN with the sanitizer that is stationed throughout the Y.

The Y will continue to work with our partners at Hackensack Meridian to make sure we are following the most current guidelines as related to both the Coronavirus and the seasonal flu.

We encourage everyone to visit the Center for Disease Controls website (cdc.gov) for the most up to date information.

As additional information becomes available, we will be sure to provide an update.

Thank you,

Steve Jobin

For Guardians and Parents:

The CDC (Centers for Disease Control) considers 2019-nCoV (Novel Coronavirus) to be a serious public health concern based on current information, however, the immediate health risk to the general U.S. public is considered low at this time. We will be updating this website to provide the latest information for our students, staff and community.
