Swim Lessons
Aquatics
The RARITAN BAY AREA YMCA has taught people how to swim for many years, and we strive to provide individuals the opportunity to enter the water in a safe and fun environment.
We are proud to offer a state of the art 10-Lane Multi-Competitive Pool with a Viewing Gallery, Recreational Pool with a temperature range of 85-87 degrees and Wibit in-water obstacle course.

LEARN MORE ABOUT OUR CLASSES and PROGRAMS
PARENT/CHILD Ages 6 months – 3 years
This class introduces water in a fun way to infants, toddlers and their parents. Children learn basic arm and leg movements while singing songs and playing games. Parents will accompany their child, ages 6 months-3 years, in the pool to acquaint them with the water environment. An instructor provides guidance in how to help your child develop coordination, motor skills, balance and social skills in the water. A swim diaper is required if your child is not toilet trained. If they are wearing a disposable swim diaper, they must be wearing a plastic pant over it.
ADULT Ages 14+
This class is for non-swimmers looking to develop basic skills such as front and back float, treading water, front and back crawl, and water safety.
PRIVATE LESSONS
Private lessons are beneficial in meeting the specific needs of the beginner, intermediate, and advanced swimmer. Lessons are arranged and scheduled based on instructor and swimmer’s availability. The duration of each lesson is 30 minutes.
SEMI—PRIVATE LESSONS
Semi-private lessons are booked for two swimmers of the same swimming level. Lessons are arranged and scheduled based on instructor and swimmer’s availability. The duration of each lesson is 30 minutes.
ADAPTIVE PRIVATE LESSONS
The Y offers adaptive lessons modified for individuals with special needs. Program curriculum will include water entry and exit, water submersion, floating, swimming to the edge of the pool, and swim-float-swim technique. With a recommendation from the instructor, swimmers will have the opportunity to try-out for RBAY’s Tsunami Swim Team.
SAFETY AROUND WATER – LARGE GROUP CLASS
The Y’s Safety Around Water program teaches children of all ages and from all backgrounds that water should be fun, not feared, as long as you know how to stay safe in and around water. We teach fundamental water safety skills that include the concepts of reach, throw, don’t go and what to look for in a safe place to swim. Kids learn what to do if they find themselves in the water unexpectedly.
GROUP SWIM LESSONS
Group swim lessons are available for children ages 3-12 years-old.
GROUP SWIM LESSON LEVELS:
Level 1: Water Acclimation—Students Develop comfort with underwater exploration and learn to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water. This Stage lays the foundation that allows for a student's future progress in swimming.
Level 2: Water Movement—Students focus on body position and control, directional change, and forward movement in the water while also continuing to practice how to safely exit in the event of falling into a body of water
Level 3: Water Stamina-students learn how to swim to safety from a longer distance than in previous stages in the event of falling into a body of water. This stage also introduces rhythmic breathing and integrated arm and leg action.
All swim lessons are only once a week. Swim lesson sessions are a total of 6 weeks, one day a week for 30 minutes.
